Education in Cork

A city, such as Cork, with a high number of primary, post-primary and third level education institutes is automatically seen as a city of learning. Cork City is home to some of Ireland's finest colleges and universities and it attracts large amounts of students from all over Ireland. Students finishing school are drawn to Cork because of its broad range of courses available in third level institutions. The city prides itself on being a place where access to learning is available for all people from all backgrounds. A key factor in Cork being named the European Capital of Culture in 2005 was Education. The Crawford College of Art and Design is one of the most respected design colleges in Ireland and University College Cork is highly regarded throughout the world as a centre for both education and research. The Government of Ireland chose Cork to be the location for the National Maritime College of Ireland due to Cork's historic and present links with maritime activity, such as Cork being the Head Quarters of the Irish Navy and the fact that Cork Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world. The city is home to the Cork College of Commerce, which is the largest post-Leaving Certificate college in Ireland. It has a large amount of courses available but specialises in Business, Administration, Applied Languages and Legal Studies. Many students who attend the College of Commerce often go on to University to attain higher degrees.
