Edmonds Community College is a college in the metropolitan area of Seattle. More than 11,000 students take courses for credit toward a certificate or degree at the college in Snohomish County, Washington.

[edit] History and governance

Established in 1967, and governed by the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges, the college is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

The college has a 50-acre campus in Lynnwood, 13 miles north of Seattle, and beside Edmonds, Washington.

The college has a campus tree walk with 70 or more trees developed with a Community Forestry Assistance Grant provided by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources with support from the USDA Forest Service. Some local high school students participate, either part-time or full-time through Running Start, a state-wide program allowing high school students to enroll and to take up to two years of community college classes tuition-free. High school students may earn an Associate of Arts degree by the time they graduate from their local high school, and continue on to a four-year college or university.

After two years of study at Edmonds Community College, students may complete a bachelor's degree online at Washington State University online and evenings at the University of Washington or on campus at Central Washington University.

[edit] Academics

The college offers the following associate's degree programs, which correspond to the first two years of study at a four-year college or university: Associate of Arts Degree, Associate of Science Degree, Associate in Elementary Education Degree, Associate in Pre-Nursing Degree and the Associate in Applied Science-T Degree (transfers to select universities).

The college has unique Materials science technology degree and Horticultural therapy degree programs.

Since 2002, the college has hosted nine full-time AmeriCorps members and provided $250,000 in part-time AmeriCorps education awards to 200 students. Each year an average of 525 service-learning students provide nearly 30,000 hours of service to 57 campus and community partners. These efforts have been recognized nationally with a Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award from Campus Compact and a Service-Learning Collaboration Award from the Community College National Center for Community Engagement.

The college received grants from the National Science Foundation to create a National Resource Center for Materials Technology Education and to study ways to increase the recruitment of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM fields.

[edit] Campus life

The college fields seven athletic teams as part of the Northern Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges with volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball and baseball teams. It also has intramural and recreational athletics. There is also a full sized golf course owned by the city of Lynnwood WA. adjacent to the campus.
