"The news media continued to promote and quote Futch despite the mixed results from his training of fighters."
This seems to imply that Futch had undeserved status and clout due to the whims of the news media. But his status was based on the training of so many championship caliber fighters and involvement in championship fights. I find this, as well as the opening line about his status among the "news media" to be an unfair, though subtle, slight on Futch. Futch is regarded as a great trainer across boxing circles, from historians to fellow trainers.
Subtle, nothing. The writer starts off by saying he trained boxers to go a matter of seconds against quality opponents, flat-out saying the guy was criminally incompetent. No mention of why the media though he was good, no mention of what successes he had, no mention of his role as Joe Frazier's trainer in ending the "Thrilla in Manila." Just a lot of snark. Sad.
