[edit] About Me

Ecthelion is a handle I have used, and I got it from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

I was born in South Korea but I grew up in the United States.

Um, what the hell else can I put in here before it turns into a Facebook or MySpace profile? Let's see: I am a recent graduate of Northwestern University, earned my B.S. in biomedical engineering there, but I probably should have been a political science/history/English triple major instead (as I seem to have more enthusiasm for topics in those fields and probably would have more aptitude in classes thereof, not that I don't have any in engineering - I do). I'm pursuing my MPH (that's master of public health) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (I'm not from Jersey; long story involved as to how I got here) before going to medical school. I am currently the president of the student government there.

I play the piano and violin, I ski, I play tennis, I sometimes play golf (but I suck at that), I'm a black belt in taekwondo, and I practice kendo as well. I used to run regularly, but since I started getting shin splints, I have taken up swimming (I used to be on my high school swimming team) instead. Since I am living on my own here in New Jersey, I do cook (but it's such a pain in the ass). While I am pretty well-read, I still have a voracious appetite for books, especially ones that require lots of thinking during and after the reading.

I used to be on the chess team in junior high school, and at my peak performance then, I defeated my coach in an after-school match. It only happened once though.

I used to be a United States Marine reservist while an undergrad at Northwestern, but because of conflicts between the reserves and school, I requested and received a general discharge.

I am Roman Catholic.

I like Korean food, but I am not averse to other foods, ethnic or otherwise. I especially like Chipotlé (it is my most favorite restaurant, franchised or not).

My father is descended from the Korean Lees of Gyeongju, and my mother is descended from the Korean Kims of Gimhae.

Currently, in addition to pursuing my MPH, I teach the MCAT and the PCAT for Kaplan, which I like to call the "evil empire of the test prep industry." All joking aside, it's a pretty good job for a student; anyone who can score at or above the 90th percentile on a standardized exam (that's Kaplan's cutoff; I scored in the 93rd percentile, a 34R, on my MCAT, and on the 99th percentile, a 450, on the PCAT) has a pretty good shot at getting a teaching job with Kaplan.

I'm a stickler for historical accuracy and correctness, but I don't care for political correctness because I feel that it skirts around the issues and doesn't face the real problems head-on. As a rather proud Korean, I might be partial to the Korean take on a lot of issues, but I am actually pretty fair and I know when the Korean take on something is inaccurate (which happens more often than you'd think, even if the inaccuracy is not due to bias).

I think I'm done with this.
