[edit] Economy of Second Life is not numismatic

If someone wants a numismatism article about Second Life, fine. Just don't hijack this one. Lee.Sailer 21:17, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] SL credit/debit card?

I'm curious about the use of Image:Linden Dollar.jpg in this article. Is this a genuine SL credit/debit card? The image's info page only states that it's been created by FrummerThanThou and released under a GNU license. If this is only someone's conception of what an SL credit/debit card could look like, then it should not be used in its current context in this article. —Slowspace 21:34, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

There is no such thing as a credit/debit card in SL. 24.205.78.242 23:41, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

If I remember rightly, it's an actual card Eric Rice had his bank knock up. So unless FrummerThanThou is Eric Rice, it should probably be removed for copyvio. Signpostmarv 05:45, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

So is the card officially recognised and approved by Linden Lab? If not, then either the image should be removed, or a caption/summary should be added, explaining that this card isn't official. —Slowspace 12:19, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
  1. It's a Mastercard.
  2. Linden Lab accept most major credit debit cards.
  3. They don't care what you have plastered all over the front of it.
However, since Linden Lab do not distribute debit cards that access your in-world currency, whereas Entropia Universe do, it would be prudent to caption the image to indicate that it is a customised debit card, and not one provided by Linden Lab.

[edit] Other exchanges than Lindex?

The article mentions that there are other currency exchanges than the official LindeX. Which are they? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bromskloss (talkcontribs) 23:03, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

SL Exchange is quite popular. —Slowspace 19:33, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GDP

I am rather sceptical about the figures regarding SL's GDP. For starters, the source cited does not state whether the 64 M USD figure is a PPP or exchange rate conversion. Actually, a Google search for '"Second Life" GDP' returns the figures 170, 220 and 700 M USD on the first page. Take your pick...

Bottom line: the current GDP figure is meaningless.

It's not GDP at all, it's just money exchanging hands, many many times, often back and forth among the same people.

In Second Life, the economy moves so fast that data on GDP and the economy is already very outdated after a month, so the 2006 articles are not relevant anymore.

There are several institutions who employ virtual world economists who do have data on that, but they usually do that via surveys which do not always display the overall Second Life GDP. Secondly, be careful when reading an article about Second Life's economy in the real-world media. If you'd look at the annual GDP as measured by the secondlife.com home page, 2007 SL GDP would be about $ 300 M - 400 M, but then we'd exclude most of the land business, so out-of-world payments, especially those for land which are done via PayPal in more then half of the cases, are rather difficult to measure.

I'd personally say that SL's GDP will be about $ 600 M this year. Mecanita 12:05, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Linden Dollar.jpg

Image:Linden Dollar.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Is this listing really necessary?

Honestly, there really is not much that is substantive in this Wikipedia listing... a lot of it is written from POV, I see some original research, the sources are not all that great... and in general this page really doesn't have any unique information to support its own listing. Would it be a total crime if we merged this with the larger "Second Life" listing? Timdlocklear (talk) 22:21, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
