Ettienne Cristo Botha was born on 15 June 1949 in Potchefstroom to Napoleon & Susan Botha.

In the early fifties the family moved to Greylingstad, a small country town in the then Eastern Transvaal, now Mpumalanga. His father was the station commander with the police. He attended Greylingstad Laerskool (Primary School) until 1962 and then the Technical High School De Wet Nel at Kroonstad in the Free State. In 1985, he obtained 5 distinctions and came 5th in the Republic of South Africa schools that wrote the external National Certificate examinations. He completed his high school in 1967, and was the school's Dux student.

Ettienne studied electrical engineering, and obtained the degrees B.Sc. B. Eng. (Electrical) at Stellenbosch University in 1974. He also completed a certificate in Advanced Executive Management (AEP) with the University of South Africa (Unisa) in 1989. He obtained a Certificate of Competency Factories (Electrical) and is a registered professional engineer (Pr. Eng.) in South Africa.

Ettienne is married to Lyna (Martha) and they have four daughters, Erika, Heidi, Melanie and Lara. The family relocated to Australia in 2001 in lives in Adelaide.
