The Eastern Ontario Portal

Eastern Ontario is a region of Ontario. It is home to approximately 1,647,000 people (2004) and comprises several census divisions (called 'counties' in Eastern Ontario): Prescott and Russell, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Leeds and Grenville, Ottawa, Lanark, Renfrew and Frontenac.

The people of Eastern Ontario are called Eastern Ontarians.

60% of Eastern Ontarians live in the City of Ottawa. Other major cities (40,000+) in the region include Kingston and Cornwall.

Major towns under 40,000 people include Pembroke, Rockland, Hawkesbury, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, Renfrew, Arnprior, Embrun and Perth.

In addition, there are numerous other small towns and villages in Ontario. Apart from the City of Ottawa, which has a predominantly urban appearance, Eastern Ontario encompasses many agricultural communities and many farms and rivers.

There is a large number of Francophones in Eastern Ontario, especially in Prescott and Russell County.

Kingston, Ontario, is a city in Canada located at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, where the lake runs into the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands begin.

The central part of the city is located between the Cataraqui River to the east and the Little Cataraqui Creek to the West, with outlying areas extending in both directions. Kingston is the county seat of Frontenac County. According to the 2001 Canadian census, the population of the city proper was 114,195, while the population of the metropolitan area as a whole was 146,838 in 2001 (including Loyalist Township in the County of Lennox and Addington.)

Kingston is nicknamed the "Limestone City" because of the many historic buildings built from limestone. This also provides the name for the Limestone District School Board which serves Frontenac County and the County of Lennox and Addington.

Canadian Forces Base Kingston (CFB Kingston) houses CFSCE (Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics), the Canadian Forces' military communications training centre.
