East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is a public university located in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It is one of the 14 state universities that compose the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). It is commonly referred to as ESU by its students and members of the community.

- East Stroudsburg University is situated in the borough of East Stroudsburg, located in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The university is 45 minutes southeast of the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre area and 40 minutes north of Allentown. The New Jersey border is only 2 miles (3 km) away and the campus is approx. 70 miles (110 km) from New York City and 90 miles (140 km) from Philadelphia. The neighboring town of Stroudsburg is the seat and cultural center of Monroe County. In Stroudsburg, students can enjoy leisurely trips such as shopping at the expansive two-story mall or attending one of the various night clubs on the Main Street. ESU is accessible from Interstate 80, US Route 209, and PA Route 33. Pocono Medical Center, the areas primary medical facility, Pocono Medical Center, is also located on the edge of the campus.

- East Stroudsburg University was founded in 1893 as the East Stroudsburg Normal School to prepare teachers; the institution changed its name in 1927 to East Stroudsburg State Teachers College and again in 1960 to East Stroudsburg State College, reflecting the addition of liberal arts and science curricula. When the legislature created the State System of Higher Education in 1983, the name was changed to East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.

- The 62 campus buildings are located on 213 acres (0.9 km²) in the East Stroudsburg community. In addition to the academic facilities, nine residence halls, housing 2,200 students, and a 1,000-seat dining hall are located on campus. The Quad is a popular area on the campus where students convene to hang out, sun-bathe and play sports during the summer, fall and spring months. In addition, The Student Activity Association, Inc., owns Stony Acres, a 119-acre (0.5 km²) off-campus student recreation area near Marshalls Creek, that includes a lodge, several cabins, a campsite, recreation areas and a lake. The campus is patrolled by the East Stroudsburg University Police Department.
[edit] Buildings
- The primary academic building is Stroud Hall. This four-story classroom building contains lecture halls, computer and language laboratories, instructional spaces and office areas. Beers Lecture Hall, which opened in 1997, seats 140 students and serves as a distance learning facility. The DeNike Center for Human Resources houses many of the classrooms and laboratories for the Departments of Health, Nursing, Recreation and Leisure Services Management. Abeloff Convocation Center hosts many of the on-campus meetings as well as many of the student sponsored concerts and guest speakers. Reibman Administration Building houses many of the administration offices. In addition, the President's office is located there. Dansbury Commons is the main cafeteria on campus. The dining facilities allow students to select from many different daily meal options. Students are presented with an all-you-can-eat buffet style of food selections and they may also choose to order cooked-on-the-spot meals from the three Chef's Stations. The Koehler Fieldhouse serves as the primary physical education facility. In addition to classrooms, it houses the indoor Track and Field, basketball, wrestling, swimming, and weight lifting facilities as well as a dance studio and racquetball courts. Many times over looked, the Fine and Performing arts center at the very top of campus is the main hub of the music, theater, and communication departments. The building houses several main stages including the recital hall, a black box experimental theater, and a coliseum style performance theater. The building also contains classrooms, art studios, and offices for the departments.
[edit] Recreation Center
In 2003, ESU opened its new recreation center, the "Rec Center". This recreational facility contains an elevated indoor track, several basketball courts, racquetball rooms, various free weight and weight machines as well as cardio machines. In addition to individual programs, there are also group fitness programs ranging from the normal (step aerobics and yoga) to the more exotic (thumb wrestling, blackjack, and square dancing) [1].

Kemp Library provides students with opportunities to acquire, process and apply information in pursuit of their academic and career goals. Library faculty and staff offer a wide variety of traditional and innovative services. While the library continues building and sharing our print collections, they also provide digital e-books and electronic course reserves. Kemp Library licenses a wide variety of full-text databases, most of which are accessible both on and off campus as well as also provide interlibrary loan and document delivery services to supplement our holdings.
[edit] Science and Technology Center
- In September of 2006, ESU began construction on the new Science and Technology Center. The Science and Technology Center is the first new major academic building since 1979. The $40,000,000 project is going to consist of state-of-the-art equipment and teaching facilities that is expected to stimulate economic growth and development in the area. The building is expected to house chemistry, math, computer science, and other various science departments. With 120,000 square feet, the building includes research and classroom space, planetarium, heated celestial observation room, as well as offices for the relocated departments. The building is opening in Summer 2008 [2].

- East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania offers 68 undergraduate major programs with 24 available concentrations, the largest of which (by enrollment) are Health and Physical Education K-12, Elementary Education, Biological Sciences, Business Management, Psychology, and Secondary Education. ESU recently added majors in Health Services Administration and Industrial Physics as well as more graduate study programs. The current student to professor ratio stands at 19:1. The breakdown of traditional students consists of 56% female, 44% male, 24% out of state, and 1% international from 9 different countries.

The university faculty totals 280 while another 400 employees make up the management and non-instructional staff. Faculty members are representative of many and varied institutions of higher education in both the United States and abroad. The terminal degree is held by 74 percent of the faculty.

- East Stroudsburg University publishes The Stroud Courier every Thursday. The newspaper covers on campus events and breaking news stories as well as local, state and national news and opinions. The University is also home to the radio station 90.3 WESS. McGarry Communications Center contains ESU's television and news studio.
[edit] Residence halls
- There are nine residence halls at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania; Hawthorn Hall, Hemlock Hall, Laurel Hall, Lenape Hall, Linden Hall, Minsi Hall, Shawnee Hall, University Apartments and University Ridge Apartments. All residence halls are coed by floor, except for Lenape, which is coed by room. All but Shawnee are double rooms with two students living in one room. Shawnee is the only triple where there are three students per room. All rooms on campus are comfortably furnished with one desk, dresser, and one singe bed per student. Any size refrigerator and microwave are allowed in the residence halls. Each floor of every residence hall has several RA's or Resident Assistance who are there to assist students with daily campus problems as well as to enforce strict rules and laws upheld in the halls.
[edit] Vocal Performing Arts
- The ESU vocal performing arts department is a very active group regularly putting on performances for school and community. There are four groups available to choose from that are readily willing to accept new members. The concert choir consists of 60-80 people that range from students to community members. Some of the recent performances in the '07-'08 school year consist of a Christmas medley at the annual winter concert and a world premiere of David Lantz's new song "When You Are Dead and Gone" and a stunning performance of the Bach Magnificat with full orchestra at the spring concert. The group is currently lead by Dr. James Maroney. Also, under the leadership of Dr. Maroney are the two elite groups selected from ESU students. The A Cappella Ensemble and the Pop/Jazz Singers are two groups the perform on numerous occasions. The two groups are embarking on a nine day performance tour to China in May, 2008. Last but not least is the musical review. This is a student run production that reviews past musicals and puts them into an upbeat, show-stopping, amazing performance.

- ESU has many opportunities for students to get involved in theater. Either with the ESU theater department or Stage II there are several performances that happen every year including the One Acts, which are run by the students in Stage II and the semi-yearly straight play. This year the large department shows were 'The Laramie Project' and the French comedy entitled 'Tartuffe,' that won over crowds with witty and stunning performances from all the students and staff involved.
- In Fall 2005, the Warrior Marching Band made its return to ESU’s Eiler-Martin Stadium for the first time in over 20 years. The band participates in all ESU football home games and select away games (including all playoff games), and has performed in the Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown, Pennsylvania; Sounds of the Valley Exhibition at Pleasant Valley High School, Soundfest at Nazareth Area High School, and Northampton High School’s Festival of Bands. In 2005 the band traveled with ESU’s Northeast Region Champion football team to the National Semi-Finals in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Marching Band is offered during the fall football season and serves to support and enhance team spirit, spectator enthusiasm, and supports ESU spirit events. The Band is served by and cooperates with a Kappa Kappa Psi chapter. The halftime show for the 2008 season will feature music from Earth Wind and Fire.

- East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania's colors are Red and Black, and the team nickname is the Warriors. All teams compete in NCAA Division II, aside from wrestling and volleyball, which compete in NCAA Division I. There are currently 10 male varsity sports available as well as 11 female varsity sports to choose from.

- Linebacker Mike Reichenbach played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1984-1989.
- Kicker Mark Brubaker is played with NFL Europe's Rhein Fire and wears jersey No. 9.
- Punter Ken Parrish signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers (2007) and wears jersey No. 2.
- Wide Receiver Evan Prall signed a two-year deal on April 30, 2007 with the Arizona Cardinals but was released on May 29, 2007. He then signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets on June 14, 2007 after an open tryout and is currently listed as wearing jersey No. 9. Prall wore No. 84 while at East Stroudsburg.
- Quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger had a free agent mini-camp tryout with the Minnesota Vikings, (2007) but the team did not sign him. He announced on June 17, 2007 that he will become the quarterbacks coach at East Stroudsburg South (Pa.) High School for the 2007 season.
- Linebacker/Fullback Kevin Nagle is currently playing for the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football League and wears jersey No. 11. He broke into the league in 2005 with the Nashville Kats.
- Offensive Lineman Jim Sodano is currently playing for the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League and wears jersey No. 70.
- Defensive Lineman Dustin Barno is currently playing with the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football League and wears jersey No. 90. Barno was on the 2005 Arena Bowl championship team as the Crush defeated the Georgia Force 51-48 on June 12, 2005.
- Quarterback Joe Deluise is currently playing with the Lehigh Valley Outlawz, Professional Indoor Football League and wears jersey No. 7.
