Used in the Doctor Who episodes "Rise of the Cybermen" and "The Age of Steel", EarPods are bluetooth-like telephones. Rounded in design they enable communication and are turned on or answered by pressing the side. They also directly downdload daily information into the brain. This happens when a warning signal sounds and everyone stops motionless as it is downloading. The designer, John Lumic, Can over ride Pods and get important encryptions and files from the memory of the person who was overrided. He uses them to take the people in and turn them into Cybermen. One of the Doctor's companions, Mickey, and Jake, a member of a group called the Preachers,(who are out to stop Lumic too) Shut down the transmiter and free people from hypnosis who have not been upgrade. They are also used in "The Army of Ghosts" and "Doomsday", by the Cybermen who came through the crack between dimensions.[1]
