Dr. Edward James McDonald (19th August 1938) was born in Cornwall to parents Edward and Sylvia McDonald.

McDonald studied at the University of Exeter in Cornwall where he received his doctorate for History, particularly preferring the period just after his birth; the rise of the Nazis.

At the age of 39 he became a professor at the university that he had received his doctorate where he went on to teach his favourite period.

McDonald came under scrutiny, locally, when many of his students began failing their courses and the Express & Echo (local newspaper) reported that he may in fact lose his post if such a high percentage of his pupils continued to fail.

Edward then went on to receive local hero status because the year in which his post was under threat, he resigned. This led him to spend the next seven years of his life living in Germany whereby he was to study the rise of the Nazis in the land where it all had happened. The 'hero' title was established upon his return where he was, infamously, offered the same post that he had left 7 years prior at a smaller income; that he accepted.

He now makes regular contributions to the Express & Echo and is a prominent guest speaker at the University of Exeter in Cornwall. His extensive knowledge of the rise of the Nazi Party along with the act of taking on a role at a lesser income than when he had first occupied it have, together, made E. J. McDonald a favourite in the field of historiography in Exeter.
