The e-Ribbon was designed as an awareness ribbon in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks by Alon Cohen. Mr. Cohen, a Boston University student at the time, posted the image at the now defunct university address http:\\people.bu.edu/xrpnt/ribbons. The site disclaimed any copyright and invited all to come, take, and share the ribbons and show the solidarity of the online community.

Google picked up the ribbon and displayed it on their homepage for a few weeks, and then again on the first anniversary of the tragedy. Many other sites, on-line and off-, picked up the ribbon. It has appeared on hundreds of sites, received hundreds of thousands of downloads[citation needed], and appeared both on the field of the Baltimore Ravens and on the official taxi medallions stamped on to the hoods of thousands of NYC taxis.[citation needed]
