I went to see REM in concert last year and Im pretty sure Michael Stripe said what this song meant and it wasnt what is written here. It has todo with River Phenoix dying and how hollywood screws up young talent. The song has many references to drugs in its lyrics. I cant remember what exactly he said but the interpretation here if definately wrong. Dont bother flaming me or anything Im just reporting what he said at the actual concert (the hyde park one suspended dueto the 7/7 bombings)
