[edit] Vandalism?
Rv - Some user decided - unilaterally - that this page was not relevant. I fully disagree. This page is linked to the "commonwealth saga" from Peter Hamilton, and describes a race of aliens that are a great part of the novel, being its villains. Maybe this has no "real-world relevance", but does any novel, movie or game have any "real-world" relevance? I don't know the motivations of this user, I don't even know his status (admin or normal user), as I don't usually take part in the WP:EN, but this pretty well qualifies as vandalism, in my opinion, and i could not stay and do nothing... Especially when "This article is within the scope of WikiProject Books"
If I remember the WP:Rules correctly, there must be a VOTE before this kind of action (redirecting a page) is taken. And check the pages that link to an article, before claiming it's useless. Sometimes, small pages like this one are merely extensions of one main article (meant to give an explanation on a single point of this article), that would not properly fit inside it, as it would make the main page too long, or too complex.

- See WP:FICT. If the subject has no real-world significance, it doesn't merit an article. --EEMeltonIV 12:17, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
-
- Then someone has to ask for a vote for deletion, as you just did.
-
- I just have to copy/paste what I just told you : Sometimes, small pages like this one are merely extensions of one main article (meant to give an explanation on a single point of this article). I think there is something you can't manage to understand here. This article gives an explanation on the main villains of a bestseller cycle of novels. It is linked on the main page of the article about this cycle of novels. If a bestseller has no impact on real-world, what has? I could certainly think of many articles about star-trek or star-wars that have very limited relevance in the real world. But that would be just trying to prove a point...
-
- You speak of WP:FICT, but did you read this : " (...)However, it is not set in stone and should be treated with common sense and the occasional exception.(...)", or are you just unable to concieve that this article can be just that occasional exception?
-
- One simple question I'd like to ask you (with a little bit of provocation) : what does bother you here? Wikipedia limited storage space? strict respect of strict rules edicted by who knows who? Or does it just bother you because you can't stand things you don't care about?
-
- Would you be happy if this was merged with the main article? Or would you just revert the merger in order to destroy any trace of any text that were on this page?
-
- I still think you qualify as a vandal, and now I start to fell like you're tending to achieve a WP:POINT... But I don't like edit conflicts, so I'll merged, as advised in :
-
- Due to the dynamic nature of Wikipedia, there are numerous articles that describe fiction subjects which lack any out-of-universe notability or do not treat the subject in an encyclopedic manner. While these guidelines are aimed to prevent the creation of such pages, failing to satisfy them is not a criterion for speedy deletion. Instead, editors are strongly encouraged to find ways to improve these existing articles through a number of means, including:(...) Merging

- The material you cited is for CSD, which I haven't nominated this for. And while the bestseller series (which I loved) should and does have an article, notability is not inherited. Neither the Dyson aliens nor the Silfen nor the Rael (nor the characters, planets, etc.) matter in the real world. And I also oppose their inclusion beyond a sentence or two in the main series article.

- Lastly, please maintain a civil tongue, and differentiate between WP:VANDAL and WP:BOLD. --EEMeltonIV 15:12, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

-
- As I said on Talk:Commonwealth Saga, the merge is premature and poorly justified. I do however think that this article needs to stay. Alex Pankratov 15:06, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

- I don't know what CSD is, but I know a thing, EEMeltonIV : you are not Wikipedia's god. You are free to edit, delete or add anything on WP, but if this becomes controversial, as this topic, you just have to abide by the rules you are so fond of. If you want to kill an article, and at least one person is opposed to it(and this also covers information destruction, just as you did to The commonwealth saga article), then there has to be a vote.
- You cannot simply delete large blocks of an article, on behalf of your own hurted feelings. For such actions, you must ask the permission of the community (i.e. anyone who has ever even simply consulted any article on any WP is part of the WP community), and bow to its decision.
- And I do keep my tongue civil, 'cause in my humble opinion, massively killing articles by ripping them for their very substance is vandalism, not being WP:Bold. You shall learn that rules are bound to be crossed, to have exceptions, because no organization can live within boundaries so stricty defined. Lastly, WP is neither a democracy, nor a dictatorship, so even rules carved in stone have limited value, simply because of the nature of free-software-like licences that apply in here.
- These are people like you that undermine WP credibility, making it impossible to edit by people other than you and your friends. Everyone's encyclopedia, so they say...
