Durham Academy is a non-sectarian, coeducational, private day school located in Durham, North Carolina. The school also has an extensive financial aid program, which provides over $1 million in assistance to promote socioeconomic diversity.

Durham Academy was founded in 1933 as Calvert Method School. In 1959, the school changed its name to Durham Academy and began an expansion which led to the first high school graduating class in 1975. Today, it offers classes from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade and serves approximately 1,127 students. A new lower school was opened in 2002 and has been since recognized by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design for its unique style. ^[1]

[edit] Organizational Structure

Durham Academy is organized into four divisions, each with its own director. The Preschool includes pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, the Lower School grades one through four, the Middle School grades five through eight and the Upper School grades nine through twelve. Tuition rates range from approximately $10,000 per academic year for pre-kindergarten, to $17,000 per academic year for the upper school. In addition, the school charges a matriculation fee of $2000, along with fees for school activities and books. Tuition generally rises at around 5% per year on average.^[2]

Durham Academy's current athletic offerings are field hockey, volleyball, cross-country, tennis, soccer, swimming, basketball, lacrosse, softball, track, baseball and golf, and a number of these teams have won multiple state championships. The varsity field hockey program has won nine out of the last thirteen Division 3-AAA titles, and the boys' lacrosse team has won ten of its last sixteen state championships, including four consecutive titles between 1996 and 1999. Both boys' and girls' track and cross-country have been traditionally strong, including a streak of 13 straight state-championships for boys' cross-country between 1983 and 1995, during which time the team also regularly won the Durham City-County Championship, defeating all of its public school rivals in the area. In addition, a number of runners from the school have gone on to Division I programs, including the Naval Academy, Wake Forest University, and the University of North Carolina.

Durham Academy's academic standards are well-regarded, and graduates are accepted into a variety of colleges and universities. By far the greatest number attend either Duke University or the University of North Carolina, with significant cohorts also attending North Carolina State University, UNC-Wilmington, Wake Forest University, and Elon University. A number of students attend Ivy League or similarly elite colleges, including Brown, Yale, California Institute of Technology, Princeton, Harvard, Stanford and the University of Chicago.^[3]
