The Encyclopædia metropolitana has both -n- and -m- spellings, listing the -m- one first, also calls it the Shire of Lennox. So it appears -n- wasn't an innovation in c. 1900. Morwen - Talk 15:40, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

The oldest "Dunbartonshire" I saw was 1816, which beats the Encyclopædia metropolitana, but I'm no sure what that proves. The New Statistical Account, which strikes me as being as reliable a source as we'll find on actual usage, has quite a digression on Du[nm]bar[ton] spellings, see New Statistical Account, v. 8, p. 229. Since it was really called "The County of Dumbarton", it doesn'tmatter all that much ... It does mention Lennox in passing. Angus McLellan (Talk) 16:06, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
