Dum Dum Pop

Dum Dum Pop or Dum Dums is a sphere-shaped lollipop named by I.C. Bahr, a Sales Manager at the Akron Candy Company in Bellevue, Ohio, in 1924. In 1953 the Dum Dum Pop was purchased by the Spangler Candy Company and moved manufacturing to Bryan, Ohio. The founder of Dum Dums was John Phillips. Dum Dums are made from sugar and corn syrup that is cooked before coloring and flavoring are added. After pressing, the stick is then added. Originally paper, Dum Dums have recently begun using hollow plastic sticks in some lollipops. In addition the outside wrapping has changed from wax coated paper to a thin plastic similar to a candy bar wrapper.
Dum Dums are made in about twelve different flavors; nine or ten of these flavors are classic flavors; two or three are cycled in and out. The "Mystery Flavor," present in every bag of Dum Dums, is a combination of two flavors in the bag. The combined flavors are random. This combination occurs because the production of Dum Dums is continuous--there is no stop between flavors. This practice results in the flavor combination.
