Talk:Duffel

Were duffel bags ever made from duffel?

My dictionary says that they are cylindrical canvas drawstring bags of twentieth century American origin, with the name deriving from the American use of duffel to mean sporting or camping equipment.

Does anybody have evidence of bags that were actually made from duffel to disprove this?

Incidentally, Joe Pesci's minorpiece '8 Heads in a Duffel Bag' brought it to the attention of us Brits that in America the word can now also refer to a holdall, which we were told you called a carryall. Surely a significant proportion of the British audience went to see this film just to see how eight heads would fit in a cylindrical canvas drawstring bag.
