Duchy of Pomerania
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Duchy of Pomerania was a historical region on the southern borders of the Baltic Sea (modern Pomerania region). It existed from around 12th century till mid 17th century and was ruled by dukes of the House of Pomerania (Griffins). Over time it fragmented into several smaller duchies, some of which were later incorporated back into it (see Duchy of Demmin, Duchy of Stettin (Szczecin), Duchy of Wolgast, Duchy of Barth, Duchy of Rügenwalde (Darłowo), Duchy of Stolp (Słupsk), Duchy of Stargard. It fell into the sphere of influence of Poland in the 1120s, thereafter regained independancy and from 1164 was a part of Germany. From the 1180s to 1227 it was also a part of Denmark. It was resolved in the 1630s in the course of the Thirty Years' War.
