[edit] License tagging for Image:BedOfNails.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:BedOfNails.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 19:06, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Helpme

{{helpme}}

Hello,

I am in need of some assistance in cleaning up the page I created for Discovery Science Center. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_Science_Center

Thank you in advance for your help.

DSCinOC (talk) 19:39, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

{{helpme}} Hi, Thank you for the help. That's what I don't understand. How else could I cite the information? No books have been written about us, etc., that I could cite.

DSCinOC (talk) 20:04, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

  • I would suggest using newspaper sources, such as the ones found here. I'm not too sure that you meet the general notability guidelines, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt. Note also that it's usually not a good idea to write about yourself, although the page you've created does seem fairly neutral in tone. {{helpme}} Hammer, could I ask you for a little more help? I am wondering why I need citations, but other similar organizations don't have them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploratorium http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Science_Center

Also, do you know how I can get my latitude and longitude listed, so that our wikipedia page will show up on google, etc.?

Thank you very much for your assistance. DSCinOC (talk) 20:42, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi! All claims made in articles should have a citation from a reliable source. It's a good habit to get into. :-) Stwalkerstertalk ] 20:44, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

{{helpme}} Hi,

Could someone please review my page to see if the citations are acceptable?

At first glance, things look pretty good except for some formatting issues. Let me do some cleanup work and I'll leave you another note containing my edit's diff so you can see what changes I made. Huntster (t@c) 21:23, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much. And if you know anything about getting coordinates on the page, that would be great, too. I really appreciate all of the help I've received today from everyone.

DSCinOC (talk) 21:29, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, getting coordinates will be no problem. Question though, I see you've provided a number of images on the page, however 1) where did you get them from (I mean, where on the website) and 2) where on the site does it say that the images are freely licensed? Huntster (t@c) 23:01, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Hi - well a few of them came from our press photo page on our Web site: http://www.discoverycube.org/Photos.aspx
And then I believe that I uploaded a few to wikipedia myself, if I remember correctly. I have access to our press photo page, so I can definitely spell out the rights/licensing. I own the images. Thank you! DSCinOC (talk) 23:15, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, the problem is that the page you linked to does state that the images have not been released under a free license, so the license you placed on those images aren't appropriate. See the line: "Alteration, sale, reproduction or commercial use of these images without prior authorization is strictly prohibited." The last part, commercial use, is the kicker, because the license you placed says that they are allowed for commercial use.
I'm not trying to be an arse about this, but legal issues are a concern of Wikipedia. While one of them could be kept to show what the place looks like (the best to keep is probably the one in the infobox), the others really can't be justified for use under fair-use law.
I'm wondering, would it be possible for *you* to take a digital photo and upload it under a free license? That way, we wouldn't be using DSC property, and the copyright issues will be avoided. Huntster (t@c) 23:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Sure! Should I post them to my DSCinOC user page and then to the Discovery Science Center page? I want to do things the proper way, so I will take any recommendations. Thank you! DSCinOC (talk) 23:29, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
One more thing ... there are two images on the page that I didn't load. Should those stay up? Thanks. DSCinOC (talk) 23:31, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Any photos you take can be uploaded here on Wikipedia or on the Wikimedia Commons (which is actually the most appropriate place for freely-licensed images, though I can move them to Commons if you just want to upload them here). If you are the one taking the pictures, you can either license them under the GFDL or Creative Commons, or you can release them into the public domain, in which you give up all rights to them (though of course you still own the original copyright...it just means anyone can take the images from *here* and do whatever they want to with them). If you need *any* assistance whatsoever regarding license issues or anything else, please leave a message here or on my talk page. Oh, and I've done some cleanup on the DSC article, so take a look and see if you have any questions. I will be removing the gallery images (actually deleting them) shortly, and I'll apply a fair-use license to the infobox picture for temporary use until you are able to take your own pictures. Thanks! Huntster (t@c) 23:40, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh, thanks for pointing that out. Yes, those images are fine because they were taken by another person and released under a free license (that only requires them to be attributed as the original copyright holder). Huntster (t@c) 23:40, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Wow, you've done a lot of work with the references. Thank you very much for that. I will definitely work on the photos. Thank you very much for leaving our main building shot for now. I will definitely contact you in the future if I need help. Thank you again. DSCinOC (talk) 23:44, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Not a problem. I forgot to say, being the space geek that I am, that I really love that Delta III exhibit...ya'll are lucky to have gotten that! Huntster (t@c) 23:47, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
And if I may make a recommendation, a shot similar to this one would be *ideal* as the infobox photo. Huntster (t@c) 23:51, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
