Description

This is typical passive fire protection problem. This wall is supposed to have a fire-resistance rating. It does not, because the firestop is inoperable. The plumber followed his instructions, to the letter, by providing a perfectly useless Section 15050 Schedule 40 sleeve, for one of the penetrants, a steel pipe. His insulator shoved in some packing and smeared in some firestop silicone. Two other penetrants did not get sleeved because the sleeve did not fit, so they were just left. The drywaller tried to "mud up" to the resulting mess and there is no way the result will stop any smoke or fire. The problem started with having each sub-trade do its own firestopping and not insisting on a separate firestop sub-trade, working for the general contractor, with clear penetration sizing and shaping guidelines. As it is, this mess destroys the fire protection plan originally set out by the architect.
