[edit] Snow Petrel
Yeah, I've had a look at your page on that particular birdie and it's good. In fact it was one of the pages I've been meaning to wrrite for a while. When I have time I'll use my books to add some more info - I also have a few websites to email to see if I can get permission to use a photo to illustrate it with. Anyways, if you're into birds be sure to check out the bird wikiproject. Keep up the good work! Sabine's Sunbird talk 18:43, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Categories
Hi. Categories are kind of strange if you're not familar with them. In the case of Mount Cleveland (Montana), the category is already there for it being under Mountains of Montana, a subcategory of Mountains of the United States, so we don't need to link the mountain to both...generally it's best to leave them in the subcategory as shown in Wikipedia:Categorization. Thanks.--MONGO 07:59, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
It's pretty confusing at times. Let me know if you need any help.--MONGO 08:15, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Infobox Mountain
Can I ask that when converting mountain articles to {{Infobox Mountain}} (for which much thanks, by the way), you do not add links to USGS unless the mountains are actually in the USA? --Stemonitis 11:17, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] License tagging for Image:Rocky butte from I-205 2003.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Rocky butte from I-205 2003.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 07:08, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Templates
I think the admin superor for the WikiProject Mountains is User:RedWolf and it might be best to see what he can do to cleanup the last of the links to the template. I also left a note on my talk page in regards to the article you mentioned, but will head over there now to take care of it. Sorry about not being more helpful at this time.--MONGO 07:07, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
I was searching the databases for the infoormation posted and nothing came up on the USGS register[1]...maybe I spelled it wrong or they use a different spelling...anyway, I'm about to turn in. I very much appreciate the hard work you are doing and I hope you're enjoying yourself. Maybe add a nice free use image or some easy commentary to your userpage...you don't have to say much, and I would discourage giving out any personal info...thanks again.--MONGO 07:19, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

I have the book in front of me, ISBN 0-7470-1410-8, which isn't the same as either of yours, however, it's Seabirds an identification guide if that helps, thanks, jimfbleak 17:28, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Same Page
Hi, I'm ekotkie, one of the folks doing isbn editing. I have seen some of your edits appearing in the M Row where I am currently working. I'd like to get on the same page with you so that I am not stepping over old ground. There is plenty to do as it is without repeating steps that someone else has done. I have had a long trek from A to M and I thought I "owned"(haha)the front end of the dictionary. Are you only doing certain titles? What are you using as your isbn locater? I am using WorldCat, Amazon and Abebooks. Appreciate a shout. EdK Ekotkie 00:49, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Same Page Pt.2
Hi Ed. To tell you the truth I've just been sort of cherry picking. I have followed on some of your work where you have left a comment and deleted some of the invalid ISBNs. I read somewhere that was the thing to do. I always try to find a good ISBN first. You might run across some comments I have left. I've started to leave my user name in the comments so I know if it was me or some one else who was the first editor.
- Hi Droll. I saw that you were putting your name in the comment line. That is a good idea and I have started leaving EdK myself. I objected to using the comment line which is an HTML format. I started originally with just a text comment in (). This raised the comment up to text level and kept a person from plowing over old ground. It also alerted a user that the data for that line was in question. My way voted down. I don't care about the cherry picking. Help is help. We need to get it done so that the entire Wiki can the be converted to 13 ISBN via a bot.
I probably will keep to my cherry picking method but I can certainly try to cooperate. I'll stay away from the Ms for now. If you could let me know which letter you're working on from time to time I stay way from where every you are working.
- Do not hesitate to read the talk page (discussion) on the CAT:INVALID page. I always leave a "Row" status and also to report any oddities that might be encountered
I ran into an edit conflict once already with an editor other than you while working on this project. Kind of frustrating.
- Name please. If there is one thing we don't need is to get in a conflict. If you run into something that appears unfair, Please do not hesitate to bring it to Rich Farnbrough's attention. He is admin and a nice guy to deal with. Please don't waste your time converting to 13. If you will note my changes, I do all 10's with NO hyphens. Leave the hyphens to the bot converter. If you go checking the larger book outfits you will not find any using a hyphen.
I use the ISBN to format numbers. Its an extra set and not really necessary. I just like to do it. It also with return an error if you enter an invalid number. I have found a few invalid numbers on Amazon and other places. I use 10 digit ISBNs almost exclusively. They can be converted by a bot later if necessary to 13 digit numbers. Other than Amazon 13 digit numbers seem to be unimplemented on the web for the most part.
- Correct. Just an extra step that you could use for a good book location search.
Other than the tools you use I tend to use Google often. Using advanced search makes it is fairly easy to find things. I use ISBN check sometimes. Its good when I find a short ISBN that just needs the checksum digit. Its really a marginal tool.
When I deleted an invalid ISBN I try to replace it with and OCLC if possible. (I use Template:OCLC. See Template talk:OCLC or if the editor used Template:cite book I use oclc =) I can sometimes find them at WorldCat. A few times I added an ASIN but I don't anymore unless its the only thing I can find. --Droll 01:35, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
- My bride is a retired U librarian and she used OCLC. OCLC is a standard for folks doing inter-library loans and for research. It won't serve much of a practical purpose for Wiki. You don't find OCLC in books either.
Thanks for dropping me a note and you are more then welcome to jump into the fray. Two key guys to look for for guidance is Rich and EdJohnson. Pick up their talk page ids off of my page. Again, welcome. EdK Ekotkie 04:03, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

- Another FWIW, my (unsolicited, I know, but it is allowed) $0.02 on some of this topic is it is silly to try to stay out of each other's way - this is a wiki environment, after all, where anyone can edit and is encouraged to do so boldly. It is easy to see what articles remain in the category, so I also fail to see the point of posting completion of a certain letter. I do appreciate the html tags so I can see whether when I start work on it, it is a new check or one that someone else has already fought with. I'll place a copy of this on the category's talk page too ... Keesiewonder talk 11:44, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mazo de la Roche
Hello Droll! How would you feel about deleting the bad ISBN from this article? I don't want to do anything if you want to study it further. Since OCLC doesn't show an ISBN, I figure they realize it's bad. Also since it's pre-1966 it may not have a real ISBN anyway. National Library of Canada says it has LCCN 60-9741 if you think it would be helpful to add that fact. EdJohnston 02:52, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] ISBN
Thanks! It seems that a surprising number of my books have invalid ISBNs printed on them. Wearisome... Cheers, -- Visviva 05:15, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
I think you fixed the ISBN in one of my articles. Thank you very much!Erudil 17:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Good work with the ISBNs. I'm one of the hopeless fat-finger putzes that screws them up. I saw you'd had less success with Italian ISBNs. I don't know if you've seen it, but there is a good Italian OPAC at opac.internetculturale.it. Hope this might be useful. All the best, Angus McLellan (Talk) 23:44, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] {{Listed Invalid ISBN}}
Hello Droll. Since it seems this much-discussed template is being put into use, how about discussing minimum standards for using it. I'd claim that either (a) an editor claims to have seen the book with the bad ISBN, or (b) the bad ISBN is found on line (not in a WP-derived source). Otherwise we might just be perpetuating somebody's copying error. And we're claiming to be a reference work! (Though perhaps not quite as reliable as the phone book, at least better than rumors from the neighbors). What do you think? Require some evidence of the ISBN being used (even though wrongly)? EdJohnston 07:06, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

- Mount Murchison (Tasmania) - there are some 50 articles + that Keesiewonder, Ekotkie and I have worked on - I thought all had been solved - for the Charles Whitham reference - if theres a change on one - its the whole range of what links here at the charles whitham article! (and Ed and Rich have had to watch the whole process - poor guys... ) :( SatuSuro 09:28, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
I am not worrying about anything - I just dont want to get mucked around with too much - it was bad enough the first time ! Its either all of them like that - unless anyone has a good bot or awb - I dont...SatuSuro 09:45, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

- Cripes not another misunderstanding... I am beginning to wonder whether the isbn project is jinxed. It had nothing to do with you at all whatsoever.... I was talking about what had happened before Keesiwonder came up with the standard format for the charles whitham referencing. Honestly, I am really wondering about the potentials for misundertsanding continuing further - so far I have had problematic misunderstandings (which have been since resolved thank god ) simply because I was unable to clear up 50 articles (or more) in the short term. This message is sent in good faith - and I hope to heaven that you understand this - this time. SatuSuro 10:16, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Hey- thats one thing I am not asking - if there is an issue with the articles - or the format that might cause someone grief - please go in there or let me know - I would rather clean it up now- I simply dont want to be told another variation of how we need to change the standard ref at charles whitham too many times or whats left of the hair at the edge of my bald head will go whiter than it is now :) SatuSuro 10:54, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- FWIW, I offer what may be a bit of clarification to what's happening and my perspective here. I also haven't caught up with all the correspondence on this topic yet ... Will get my 2nd cup of coffee. Keesiewonder talk 11:18, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- Continued our talk at my talk. No worries, please! Keesiewonder talk 12:11, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] DVD isbn's
Saw your comment about "do dvd's have isbn's?" The answer is a confusing, yes. Yes, because3 I have an extensive DVD collection and they all have isbn's. Confusing because Amazon, one of the better references for isbn, does not show isbn in the dvd section. Kind of like the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, don't you think? Have a great day. It pretty much looks like the isbn business is about done. Have a great day. Ekotkie 02:10, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] DVDs and ISBNs (cont.)
Thanks for the note about DVDs. Yea, it looks like we're getting there. I'll have to start looking for something to do next. --DRoll 04:45, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- No problem. Just an observation from my own DVD collection. I am not too impressed with the ISBN process. Neither is my retired University librarian wife. I fully understand the need to catalog and control books but far too many people don't bother to learn about the system and abuse the heck out of it.(As we have seen) I've tried to learn and even I had my moments with this lame conversion process to 13. Rich, here, did a marvelous job with the bot and EdJ was a great "moderator and fixer". Even so, we all saw some weird things pop up. As for things to do, if you really like books like I do, go grab yourself some authors and improve their pages. I have 24 authors whose pages I monitor and try to improve. I've created 6 author pages that were not here and in the process have talked to these same authors as the pages were developing. All have been great and very happy that their book history was being captured. There is plenty of stuff to do if you look around. If you do get into these author pages, I highly recommend that you become familiar with the Library of Congress (LoC)I keep a large 3-ring binder here at my desk with copies of stuff on all the authors that I work on.(CYA) Have a great day and jump in, the water is fine. [edit] Three-Fingered Jack
When looking at the page for the volcano Three-Fingered Jack I noticed that you had altered the redirect and main article pages around. You actually did this in a way which breaks the GFDL. The GFDL requires attribution and the way you had done the alteration removed that attribution. I would also point out that having a hyphen in the name of the mountain is actually the correct way to write the name. A noun is effectively being used to describe an adjective which in turn, of course, describes a second noun. The correct way to represent that is to place a hyphen in between the noun describing the adjective and the adjective. I have now altered things back to the way they were.
In future if you want to move a page like that then you need first to get an administrator to delete the redirect and then move the page to its new location. That preserves the attribution required by the GFDL. David Newton 20:03, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Droll -- I believe that the article should not have a hyphen in the title, see discussion at Talk:Three-Fingered Jack. Thanks. hike395 21:21, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] WS Collaboration project
G'day, this weeks Wikisource collaboration project is G. W. Bush and I see that you have contributed to this page in the past. [edit] Trask Mountain
You've addressed the date format part, but the first few citations are not full. These are not my specifications, but those as outlined in WP:CITE. I did one of them so you can see what a full citation looks like for a web resource. Aboutmovies (talk) 01:48, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- The 2008-03-31 format is fine, even in the ones I reverted, as long as they are linked: See this part when editing: 2008-03-31; March 31, 2008; 31 March 2008. All should appear exactly the same based on your user preferences when viewing, though each is entered differently. They just must be linked for the magic to happen. The templates (web cite) automatically link the date, so if you use those it will display properly. One of the problems before (the edit I reverted) is you changed the existing dates that were linked into the 2008-03-31 format without linking them. That was the problem with that. The other issue was not providing full citations, which has now been fixed. But just remeber, the citation templates are not necessary, they are really just a convenience or crutch, you can simply enter the information in the <ref></ref> in the proper order and format, as the templates usually have a lot of fields you will not have info for. Good luck. Aboutmovies (talk) 03:20, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't remember which mountains: I think I looked up several of the stratovolcanoes in NGS. Looks like you fixed them already: Jefferson, Hood, etc.

[edit] WP:EIW
Hi Droll. See Wikipedia talk:Editor's index to Wikipedia#Proposed approach for a plan to make shortcuts and anchors for the Editor's index. There is a rationale, though I admit I don't understand it yet. (You had removed some items). EdJohnston (talk) 14:16, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] WP:EIW
If I don't get the proposed shortcuts (templates) actually implemented in (say) a week, feel free to remove them again. But do leave the "span" text alone - those are anchors, and they don't show up on error reports, whether they are used or not. (They are needed for the shortcuts, but they are also used simply like this: WP:EIW#Assist, in a lot of places, and may continue to be used that way.) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:08, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Category update delay
I saw in one of your edit comments that you are not aware of why there is a delay in category updates. You might want to read this: Category talk:Wikipedia shortcut box first parameter needs fixing. I have now also added an explanation about this at CAT:SHORTFIX since several editors have asked about it. Oh, and thanks for helping out with CAT:SHORTFIX !
