It's common English usage and helps break up the monotony of repeatedly using the terms "club" or "team". Other terms used in a football context might include "association" or "eleven". You'll find "side" as it refers to a team listed as a definition if your look up the word on www.yourdictionary.com, for example. Look up "eleven" and you'll see a specific reference to football.
