what was happening in the world maurits escher when escher drew the picture drawing hands

I think someone should add something about the video for "Drive" by Incubus (band), since this drawing most likely inspired the idea for the video.

Perhaps this isn't a picture of two hands drawing each other INTO existence but a race to make the other hand inanimate; a struggle to stay real.
