Dragon Quest IX Hoshizora no Mamoribito (ドラゴンクエストIX 星空の守り人 Doragon Kuesuto Nain Hoshizora no Mamoribito, lit. "Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky") is the ninth installment in the acclaimed Dragon Quest series, developed by Level-5 and published by Square Enix.
[edit] History
On August 19, 2006, series composer Koichi Sugiyama confirmed that Dragon Quest IX is in development. He is quoted by Japanese video game magazine Famitsū as saying "I'm not sure when Dragon Quest IX will be released, but it seems that progress is continually being made. I'm personally excited."[2]
On December 12, 2006, during a press conference celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Dragon Quest franchise, Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest IX will be released exclusively for the Nintendo DS handheld video game console. This makes it the first original numbered Dragon Quest title to debut on a handheld. Dragon Quest IX will feature turn-based combat[3] and cooperative multiplayer for up to four players via Wi-Fi.[4]
On August 27, 2007, Square Enix announced that the Japanese release of Dragon Quest IX would be delayed from 2007 to 2008. The company cited the need for more time to make a better game as reason for the delay.[5] As of February 2008 however, the company refuses to give a specific time frame for the game, despite it being "almost complete"[1] and despite Akihiro Hino's goal to complete development by 2008.[6]
