Dr T Pearse Lyons

Dr T Pearse Lyons is the founder, owner and president of Alltech, a global animal health company that employs more than 1,900 people and has a presence in 113 countries around the world.

A biochemistry graduate of the National University of Ireland in Dublin, Dr Lyons went on to take a master’s and doctoral degree at the University of Birmingham, England. He subsequently worked as a biochemist at Irish Distillers. Dr Lyons joined the enzyme company BioCon in Kinsale, Ireland before moving to Lexington, Kentucky in 1980.

In October of that year, he created Alltech with a USD 10,000 stake and second-hand equipment.

By December 1980, sales had reached USD 150,000. A year after inception, Alltech’s turnover reached USD 1 million; under Dr Lyons’ leadership, revenue has grown at over 20% yearly since.

Dr Pearse Lyons was the Kentucky recipient of the Entrepreneur of the Year in 1993. He has been recognised for his contribution to science and industry and has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Plymouth, England, and Heriot-Watt University, Scotland. His alma mater, National University of Ireland, Dublin, selected Lyons as one of its honorary doctorates on the occasion of its 150th anniversary.

Recently, Dr Lyons was recognised as one of the top 15 Irish-American life scientists of the year by Biolink USA-Ireland. He has authored more than 20 books and numerous research papers in scientific journals.

Dr Lyons is married with two children. His son, Dr. Mark Lyons, is director of international projects at Alltech.
