Dr (General Medico) Miguel Caetano Dias

Dr General Miguel Caetano Dias, (b 9 July 1854, d 26 July 1936) Began medical career in Goa 1888, promoted to rank of major and in the same year to Lieutenant Colonel. Appointed Chief of Health Services & Director of Escola Medica e Cirurgião de Goa (Goa Medical School) in 1906.Bestowed several honours by the colonial Portuguese government: Cavaleiro, Oficial and Comendador da Real Ordem de S. Bento de Aviz. From the Queen of Portugal, D. Amélia, he received the silver medal for his work in India and achieved renown for his work in exterminating the bubonic plague in Panaji in 1908. Mayor of Pangim Municipality and President of the first Provincial Congress of Goa. At the request of the government, drew up a report for the sanitation, hygiene and aesthetics of Panjim. His brother Major Vasco Santana Dias paid his studies in Lisbon, Portugal. Major Santana Dias descendents live now mostly in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr Miguel Caetano Dias achieved the rank of General (the only Goan General of the Portuguese army).
