Downgekel, (real name Philippe Daetwyler, originally Phillip Kenny) is an american rapper living in Switzerland
Early life (1988 - 1995)
Phillip Kenny was born in St Joseph hospital, in Memphis, Usa on february 5th, 1988. When he was three months old, he moved to switzerland with his mom, where she met her future husband. Phillip spent his early years moving around in french-speaking parts of Switzerland till he arrived in Courtelary (jura). Phil has two younger brothers, louis and Marc and a younger sister, Olvia. Phillip was introduced to the hip hop scene when he was 7, when Tony Mac gave him a copy of lords of the undergrounddebut album,here come the lords.
later life 1995 - present
in 2000, his parents were divorced. His mom moved to french-speaking capital, Geneva and his dad stayed in swiss-german-speaking part of switzerland, Bern county. The real change in phillip's life was in 2001, when Eminem released the marshall mathers LP and Redman released his 4th album Malpractice. He's been a big fan of Redman, eversince.
In 2004, along with one of his classmates, phillip started writing his first rhymes then called akuma(coming from video game Street fighter) and making his first tracks. Helped out by rapper Sentin'l and producer/rapper Spy, he really found the motivation for rapping. After repeating a year in school and causing alot of trouble in school, his mom sent him to Ireland for a year to calm him down. During his stay, he met another fan of Redman's, Jason Baalham, and this way developped his love for his music. His dad alowed him to come and live with him after a year there. He then moved to Biel/Bienne, with his dad, reputed as hip hop's promised land, in Switzerland. Late 2006 marked another change for Phillip, as he changed his artist name to Downgekel and met a talented producer and rapper, Khaled, one night, at a freestyle battle, in Biel going by the Name of KSA, part of RDB style. Phillip then began studying seriousely and finally decided on recording his first CD, Upside down along with his friend and partner, KSA. He released his 11-track Upside down in november 2007.
He is now working on his 2nd coming with KSA for the end of summer 2008.
