Raul Julia appeared in "Down Came a Blackbird" as a brutal torturer

in an unnamed (?) South American country. He joins a clinic whose patients are recovering Holocaust and other torture victims, among them actress Laura Dern playing a journalist who becomes a close friend of the Julia character. The film suggests that they even had a romantic interlude at least once. Vanessa Redgrave, the clinic's proprietor and a psychologist, along with the Dern character, are stunned when they discover Julia's past, and he has suffered immense guilt and joined the clinic to discover what he really had done. "Down Came a Blackbird" is Raul Julia's final film in which he is able to exhibit his remarkable acting qualities.
