The paragraph about his drunk driving arrest is NOT original writing and needs to be credited to the AP I think.

[edit] Last Year as a Marlin?

Is this Dontrelle Willis's last year with the Marlins? Because he signed a 1 year deal with the Marlins he will be a free agent in 2008. It is incredibly difficult for a team to resign a good or great player since there is always a team to offer a riduculous amount of money. The Oakland A's tried to resign Frank Thomas and Barry Zito but couldn't match the massive deals they were offered. The Marlins appear not to offer a long term deal worth tens of millions of dollars unless the two can bargain with each other which is doubtful. Willis loves Florida but with his current struggles( won over 20 games in 2005 but went 12-12 in 2006)and the Marlins commitment to not spending big on players( they don't want to spend alot of money since they are in need of a stadium) but given the deals he'll likely be offered by other teams, probably in the range of 100 million, and the deal he'll probably be offerd by the marlins, between 1 or 3 years with at least 10 million at best, his commitment will be tested . It wouldn't be surprising if we see Willis playing for the New York Mets with a 5yr deal worth over 100 million considering his high winning percentage against them( he has more wins against them than any other active pitcher). Unless Willis has a great year with the marlins, and even then there is no gurantee, it is unlikely that that the marlins will be able or will resign Willis.
