[edit] Summary

Equestrian statue of Don Juan de Oñate 1598, explorer who named El Paso, Texas. Currently the largest bronze equestrian statue in the world. Sculpture by John Sherrill Houser, erected at El Paso International Airport (ELP). A project of XII Travellers through El Paso. Picture taken by self, December 2006.

The bronze was created by Houser with extensive studies. An Andalusian stallion was used in studies for the sculpture. Oñate's helmet is that of a Captain-General, with a rounded brim rather than the pointed ones used by ordinary soldiers. The Virgin and the Cross on the sides of the helmet are copied from a helmet found in a New Mexico volcanic cave, believed to be from the Oñate expedition to New Mexico.
