Donald S. Harrington

Donald Szantho Harrington (July 11, 1914 – September 16, 2005) was an American politician and religious leader. He was born in Newton, Massachusetts and entered the Unitarian Church. He served as a minister in Hobart, Indiana, Chicago, and Beverly Hills, California before becoming the minister at The Community Church of New York Unitarian Universalist in New York City.

A conservative in religion, he headed New York’s Liberal Party [1]beginning in 1966. He was Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr.'s running mate for Lieutenant Governor of New York State in 1966. Harrington married Vilma Szantho, who had been a Unitarian minister in Hungary. She was once was told by Albert Schweitzer that he was also Unitarian.

A past president of United World Federalists, Harrington wrote Religion in an Age of Science (1965). John Dewey's wife asked Harrington to preside over her husband's funeral .

Harrington died at the age of 91 in Romania, having never fully recovered from gall bladder surgery in the spring of 2005.
