The film tells the story of psychiatrist Dr. Nathan R. Conrad (Michael Douglas) whose wife, Aggie (Famke Janssen), and daughter, Jessie (Skye McCole Bartusiak), are held hostage, while he must unlock the key to a hidden fortune, locked away in the memory of young mental patient Elisabeth (Brittany Murphy).
