Domed Labels
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Domed Labels are screen printed, or digitally printed, pressure-sensitive labels that have a liquid polyurethane coating applied to their surfaces. The liquid coating can be applied in many different ways, ranging from manual application via syringe to optically-guided, automated dispensing equipment. Once applied, the polyurethane liquid flows to the edge of the label and stops (due to the surface tension of the liquid), eventually hardening into an attractive clear dome.

[edit] Uses of Domed Labels
Domed Labels are used in many applications. Original Equipment Manufacturers choose them for product identification. Because of the labels' attractive three-dimensional appearance, the contents of the label (perhaps product name, model number, or graphic) "pop out" at the viewer. This makes the product in question more eye-catching than it's competition.
Domed Labels are also preferred by users who want a more rugged labeling solution. The clear polyurethane substance, even after curing (hardening), is self-healing. Minor scratches or cuts heal themselves and the label looks like new once again.
Some end users prefer the tactile feel of a three-dimensional label as well as it's cosmetic benefits. Some clothing manufacturers actually use them as a disposable item and apply them to their clothing's in-store hangers. The hangers are shaped in such a way that the customer will touch the labeled part of the hanger when picking up the article of clothing for inspection. This initial tactile feel ads to the perceived value of the clothing. Costume jewelers have also used domed labels for their products.
Another example of a domed label application for tactile purposes can be seen in the photo. At bottom-left in the image, a piece is visible that is used on a shift-knob for an automobile.
[edit] Materials and Steps of Domed Label Creation
- The first layer is the label material. The material can be any print-industry recognized label material (from paper to many forms of plastic).
- The second layer is the ink. The label can be multiple colors, photo-quality graphics, or simple text. The ink is applied using screen or digital print technology.
- After the ink has cured (dried), the labels are laser or die cut so the waste material can be removed from the press sheet.
- The liquid polyurethane material is then applied to the labels that remain on the press sheet. The sheet is left to cure.
