[edit] Description

Delphinus delphis

  • Photo: Shane Anderson - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Central Library.
  • Printing resolution: 300 DPI.
  • Downloaded from http://www.sanctuaries.nos.noaa.gov/pgallery/pgchannel/living/living_3.html.
  • Leyend: While one may likely see birds flying within the CINMS boundaries, one may also see dolphins "flying" out of Sanctuary waters. The common dolphin (Delphinus delplu) is the most abundant cetacean species off the California coast, and may be seen traveling in pods of one thousand or more, swimming at speeds up to 25 miles per hour!! Common dolphins are known to dive to depths of 21 meters (70 feet) and can stay underwater for at least 15 minutes before surfacing.
  • Note: It's not Delphinus delplu, the correct binomial name is Delphinus delphis.
Attribution information, such as the author's name, e-mail, website, or signature, that was once visible in the image itself has been moved into the image metadata and/or image description page. This makes the image easier to reuse and more language-neutral, and makes the text easier to process and search for. Commons discourages placing visible author information in images; if you do not wish for this image to be used with this information removed, and it is not public domain or under free use terms, you may request that it be deleted.
