[edit] What is the DOI bot?

The DOI bot is a piece of software designed to expand and fix citations on Wikipedia.

Among other things, it adds missing DOIs, makes sure they are correctly formatted, corrects mis-spelt parameters in the {{cite journal}} template, and adds title, journal, page number, etc information.

[edit] Can I use the DOI bot?

Yes - in fact, you are strongly encouraged to!

You can ask the DOI bot to look at pages "on demand", which might save you a lot of editing. There are two ways of doing this:

1: Bookmark http://tools.wikimedia.de/~verisimilus/Bot/DOI_bot/. This page contains a form and a few options; you can use it to let the bot know which pages you want it to edit.

2: Add a widget to your toolbox. This will add a link to the "toolbox" on the left of your screen. Clicking that link will make the DOI bot fix all the citations in the page you are currently looking at.

[edit] How do I add a widget?

Simple. Paste the following line of code:

importScript("User:Smith609/toolbox.js");

at the end of Special:MyPage/monobook.js. Save the page, and press Ctrl-F5 to clear your browser's cache.

The link should now appear whenever you view an article.

If you have problems, Smith609 Talk will be pleased to help out!

[edit] Why should I add a widget?

Do you ever add references to Wikipedia articles? Do you get frustrated copying and pasting author names, titles, journals, page numbers, etc...? Wouldn't it be nice just to copy in the DOI and leave it at that?

With DOI bot, you can. Just type {{cite journal| doi = 10.####/whatever}}, save the page, and set the bot on it - then the bot will fill in all the details you missed!

Or, does the software provided by your library recognise DOIs and link them to versions you have access to? If a pages' references are missing DOIs, there's a good chance DOI bot can find some of them. Give it a whirl!

Or, are the citations in your page a mess? Missing page numbers, badly formatted fields? Just set the bot on it and it will set things to right!

[edit] What if...

If you spot a bug with DOI bot, please report it here.

If you have an idea for how the bot could be even more helpful, let its maintainer know, and he should be able to implement it!
