Mail client, web browser with miniature DNS cache client programs connect with a DNS resolver incorporated into the operating system of your computer. The DNS resolver in your operating system is connected to your ISP's DNS resolver, which also has a cache. If something isn't found, it's looked up via recursive DNS search.
