Geoff Butler was born Geoffrey David Scott on January 20, 1970 at the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA to Carma Jean Scott and George Abott Butler. His parents were never wed. His name was legally changed in 1978 to Geoffrey David Butler. He has a half-sister, Rebecca Lynn Butler.

Geoff Butler was the technical director the the Sacramento Kings broadcast that won the Northern California 2005 Emmy Award for Sports Live Broadcast[1]

He also was the technical director of NBC Sunday Night Football which won the 2007 Emmy for Outstanding Technical Team Remote[2]
