A distress rocket is a rocket that takes off and warns nearby ships that your ship is in distress. Each one has an amount of distance that the rocket or the light can be seen and it can also be used to signal airplanes. Distress rockets were made because of the disaster of the Titanic during when it sank there were fireworks on board and they were fired in the air to warn nearby ships.[citation needed] These were the first signal rockets in history yet when they were fired on the Titanic they didn't burn for long and people thought they were celebrating a huge party and people and the Californian thought nothing was wrong. Due to the sinking the rockets were designed to signal people in real emergency and is an emergency signal. Yet the rockets can also be used for navigation problems, engine trouble, steering gear problem, lost or damaged propellers, and icebergs.
There are different types of distress rockets. Some can be used on shore others require a boat, and there can be Smoke Distress Rockets, Explosion Rockets, Light Rockets, And Colored Smoke Distress Rockets.
