Diocese of Roscrea

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Irish Catholic diocese of Roscrea (Irish Ros Cré) existed in some form as an ecclesiastical territory, from the 7th to the 12th century. It was united into the diocese of Killaloe.[1] A recent history dates it from the Synod of Kells-Mellifont, giving two bishops, up to 1168[2].

Its see was Roscrea monastery, from which grew the modern town of Roscrea, Tipperary. It was a sixth-century foundation of St Cronan.

The territory was that of the O'Carrolls and the O'Kennedys[3].
