Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Italian Catholic diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno has existed since 1986. In that year the historic diocese of Nocera de' Pagani was united with the diocese of Cava e Sarno. The diocese is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno.[1]

[edit] History

St. Priscus, the first bishop of Nocera dei Pagani, was not the same person as Priscus of Capua. Another early bishop was Coelius Laurentius, competitor of Pope Symmachus (498).

In 1260 the assassination of the bishop caused the suppression of the diocese, but Pope Urban VI restored it in 1386. Later bishops were

  • Giovanni Cerretani (1498), a jurist;
  • the historian Paolo Giovio (1528), succeeded by his nephew Julius and his great-nephew Paul;
  • Simone Lunadoro (1602), diocesan historian.

United to the see of Cava in 1818, the diocese was reestablished in 1834.[2]
