"Digging the Grave" was the first single to be released from Faith No More's 5th studio album King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime. Like the rest of the singles released from the album, it failed to chart in the U.S. However, the song became the band's fourth-highest charting single in the UK.

Although the song displays a raucous angry side to the album, the lyrics seem personal and almost vulnerable. The song is about a failed relationship that ultimately enlightens the narrator (Mike Patton) to a better understanding of their self and what they want as a person.
