Dhamtari is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 317 metres (1040 feet).

In 1941 Dhamtari had a population of 14,071.[2]

As of 2001 India census,[3] Dhamtari had a population of 82,099. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Dhamtari has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77% and, female literacy is 61%. In Dhamtari, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

There are significant lead deposits in the area of Dhamtari.[4] Most of the city's workforce is involved in the timber industry or in rice or flour milling. There is also some presence of a chemical industry.[5]
