Thanks to whoever has improved this page recently - it's looking much better. OlderBrother 13:57, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes - slowly this page has been getting better and better as more people have taken interest. This current revision is indeed very good. Well done to all editors of it! SIGURD42 18:14, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
A couple of pictures of the town would be nice. I think ideal subjects would be either the town hall, the minster or the markets. Preferably on a sunny day!

[edit] Origin of the name
I've put this as a separate section to History, as there seems to be some controversy about the origin. I'll try and put in references to my online sources asap. Some of the theories seem pretty weak to me, but I'm not in a position to make a definitive call on this. Growing up, I was told it meant "David's Fort", so I'm leaning towards theory no. 2. --OlderBrother 19:54, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
When I was at school (either Eastborough Infants and Junior or the Wheelwright grammar school, can't recall how old I was) I was taught that in the Middle Ages it was known as Daw's Green. This was backed by a duplicated map of the mediaeval settlement. However, I kave no source for that beyond my own recollection! --APRCooper 20:06, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] LLers
I love how at the bottom there was a sentence that referred to people from LUElinks as faggot LLers. I fixed it. I'm just wondering who originally wrote this page...
Can somebody define "LLers"? --Sanguinus 00:01, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I removed it. If it does mean townie or chav, it's an NPOV problem anyway. Definately not suitable. --Sanguinus 03:14, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, please explain, link or delete it Marriex 11:52, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I think that it may be another word for "chav", "scally", "townee", etc. I can't think of anything that Dewsbury's "well-known for", apart from being a very tough town. I think that this article reflects that quite well.
It means Leeds Loiners ...
[edit] Mohammad Sidique Khan
Technically, Dewsbury wasn't his "home town". It was only his home town in the sense that it was where he was living just before he commited the terrorist attacks. "Home town" means the place you grew up in. He was born in Leeds and grew up in Beeston, and was only living in Dewsbury since the beginning of this year.
Obviously he should be in the article as he is connected to Dewsbury, but only in a similar the same way to Patrick Stewart- neither were born and raised in Dewsbury, but they have a connection there as the both lived and/or worked there at some point.

- The dictionary definition of hometown can be either place of birth or place of residence. On a connected note the latest news release of another Dewsbury resident arrested on charges relating to terrorism should be included. Maybe make a seperate heading dealing with the negative impact on Dewsbury and the local Asian community due to the terrorism/terrorists. Death Eater Dan (Muahaha) 02:36, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] On education...
St. John Fishers RC High School has consistantly got a high OFSTED report (or should I say low) averaging between 2-3 (1 being the best) and i think therefore should get a mention in the education section. (i won't get into the outstanding grades year after year) the ofsted grading is as follows: 1=outstanding 2=good 3=satisfactory 4=in-adequate the most recent ofstead report gained a 2-good that must deserve a mention as 1's are near-on impossible to get! [edit] Riot
Someone obviously doesn't like mentioning the riots. I understand that they're not the nicest of things, but they can't be ignored. I don't know much about the 1989 one, but understand that it was quite big news at the time. The one in December was only small, but this was indicated in the article. Does anyone want to say why they don't want these things to be mentioned? Epa101 17:16, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
Were the riots significant enough? Were they reported in the local/regional/national press? first I've heard of them, plus the wording on riots/race relations on this page seems to be sensationalist rather than factual.--Msp 22:40, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, they were at the time, although it's a while ago. However, after the unpleasant use of that part of the article, I think that I might go back on above statement and say that we need change. It is undeniable that Dewsbury has problems with race relations, but hearing about that neo-Nazi video persuades me that it might be best to stick to happy topics. Epa101 23:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
I've decided to remove all content to do with race relations. I know that that's not strictly in accordance with policy, but I think that this was an emergency. Epa101 23:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Important
This article was actually quoted by a neo-Nazi video "Dewsbury needs help". I think that the demographics section might need a bit of rewording. Epa101 22:41, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- I think the entire demographics section needs a full rework as it's been subject to so much abuse, additions/edits should always be approached from a fact providing perspective rather than with a soapbox slant. I don't think attention shouldn't be brought to minor incidents which have no impact on the town itself, or on how it's seen. I agree with Epa101 that possibly only 'happy topics' should be added to the page to prevent future vandalism. Msp 06:49, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Retail
I think a separate retail section could be added. This section would include further details about the famous market and the possible decline of the town centre (with Marks and Spencer closing, increasing amount of empty shops etc). Msp 06:40, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- Although the market is mentioned, I think it should be noted that at one point it was one of the most popular in the country. Thanks.
