Devayani (Tamil தேவயானி) is a Tamil actress who was born on June 22,1973 in Mumbai (Bombay), India. Her real name is Sushma. Besides Tamil, she has done films in Bengali, Malayalam, Hindi and Telugu. She started her career with a Hindi film called Goyal followed by a few Malayalam films.[1] Her first Tamil film is Thottaa Chinungi where she played her only glamorous role to date.[citation needed] She got her big breakthrough in Kadhal Kottai opposite Ajith which was a super hit making her a top heroine in Kollywood and one of the most successful in South Indian Cinema. Devayani has a screen image of a sari clad virtuous family based women unlike the bare clothed modern heroine after Kadhal Kottai.[2] She has become a virtual cult figure in Tamil Nadu after the success of the Mega Serial Kolangal in which she plays the role of Abhinaya, the eldest daughter. Kolangal is arguably the best ever serial in Tamil Television industry, and has the highest viewership for any Tamil serial ever.She won Tamilnadu Government's Best Actress award for Kadhal Kottai and Surya Vamsam[3][4]

Devayani studied B.Com in National College in Mumbai University. Devayani is a polyglot who knows Tamil, English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and telugu, Malayalam languages. Her father's name is Jayadev and her mother's name is Lakshmi. She has 2 brothers, Mayoor and Nakul. She married Director Rajakumaran on April 9, 2001 at a temple in Tiruttani near Chennai (Madras). Devayani had acted in Suryavamsham, directed by Vikraman when Rajakumaran was assistant to the director. She was the leading lady in Nee Varuvai Ena, the debut film of Rajakumaran. She was again the heroine in Vinnukum Mannukum, in which she played the role Devayani, the actress. A daughter was born to the couple in 10 January 2006 named Eniya. She recently built a house named Kadhal Kottai after her first big hit film in Chennai (Madras).[5] Devayani is an expert in cooking, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items and her favourite dish id Madras 69. Popular actress Roja & Meena are her close friends. During a film shoot in a remote village near Mysore back in 2001, for a Kannada movie, Premotsava, when the designated make-up artist, failed to turn-up, its learnt that Roja hairdressed Devayani and helped her with make-up for the song video shoot with Vishnuvardhan.
