Deuce Coup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deuce Coup was a ballet by choreographer Twyla Tharp, set to music (mostly) by The Beach Boys, for the Joffrey Ballet. The ballet has been in their repertory in several redactions since the 70s, and is still being danced.

One section in the ballet is Alley Oop, a 1960 hit song named after V. T. Hamlin's comics strip. It is set for a small group of men and women, who're cutting up like stoned college kids at a party.

Their section is followed by one that's speeded up, so it sound like the Chipmunks singing, for a solo man center-stage who moves frantically and seems always about to fall but somehow never does, like a drunk who somehow never loses balance and has some kind of magical luck; he seems proverbial.
