Design Walk [1] is an annual design festival in Athens with the participation of various creative studios that operate in the neighbourhood of Psyrri. Psyrri, an area in the heart of Athens, is home to more than 15 design studios, something that can hardly go unnoticed. People with common interests, similar backgrounds and studies, both in Greece and abroad, parallel working fields and the same love for the Athens downtown, create – not on purpose, but then again not by accident – a professional map, a dynamic field of applied arts in the centre of the city. The idea for the Design Walk exhibition was conceived by The Design Shop, G and Pi6, three creative studios that are based in Psyrri.

A walk through the creative studios of Psyrri

The Design Walk started in January 2007 and it was a three-day, all-day exhibition with the participation of 14 design studios. It consisted of small autonomous exhibitions, with work that covered a large field of visual communication such as design and typography, illustration, photography, video and installations by Greek and foreign designers. Every studio chose a medium and worked hard to make it happen with experimental projects, interactive games, graffiti, etchings, small stories, collages and installations. Guest designers, both from Greece and other countries, were invited to participate, commenting on urban culture and the coexistence of the mainstream and the underground. Every office became an exhibition of work created freely, without commercial boundaries or limitations that usually originate when promoting a product.

These three days had full media coverage and a total of more than 2000 people filling the studios of Psyrri. The neighborhood, the timing, the close proximity of the studios and the media promotion were all factors that resulted to such a positive response and the success of it all.

DESIGN WALK 2008
Three days of collaboration at the creative studios of Psyrri

In 2008 the second Design Walk took place from 1 - 3 February. The design studios of Psyrri invited designers across the globe (from European metropolises such as Athens, London, Paris, Milan, Hamburg and Madrid to Montana U.S.A) to unite with them and choose a theme in order to create an exhibition. This creative junction, promoted the concept of “collaboration” in visual communication, combining graphic design and audiovisual forms. It explored the relationship of design with various art forms as diverse as cooking and architecture and aimed to decrease the gap between sender and receiver. The creative teams of Psyrri, re-opened their doors to the public and set up an interactive design playground in the centre of Athens.

Once again Psyrri area was full of people (more than 2.500) walking around with their design walk map to help them orientate and find all the spots of interest. The Design Walk exhibition became one of the most important cultural events in Athens and gain the interest of the public as well as of design and business professionals.
