Desboro, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Desboro is a small town in Grey County, Ontario, Canada. Desboro is located south of Owen Sound, near Chatsworth. Desboro is a hub of sporting activity, most notably baseball and hockey, and for many years held a Men's Fastball Tournament in August. Desboro has a newly refurbished arena and two full-sized baseball diamonds complete with bleachers and a snack bar. There also is the Desboro Tavern, one of the few remaining rural taverns in Ontario. Additionally there are two feedmills, one garage and a tractor dealership (Maluskie's has since closed...)

The population of Desboro is somewhere around 200 and is surrounded by a very proud and supportive community.

Every year on Labour Day weekdend, Desboro hosts an annual Agricultural Fall Fair that should not be missed. The fair brings many of the surrounding farmers together to compete for items such as tallest corn, best hay, best selection of antiques and best antique tractors. There are a variety of games for children (everyone loves to watch the frog jumping competition and play a game at the carnival tent). The local youth demonstrate what they learned as members of the many 4H clubs including the calf club and the Potato club, and you can even have your chance to buy some of the prize winning potatoes.

The village of Desboro is built on limestone bedrock which is about 2-3 feet below the surface. This rock structure has led to some interesting basement designs in the area where the basement consists of a hole smashed out of the bedrock just big enough to fit a furnace. The evidence of this consistent geological feature is evident on almost all surrounding farms in the form of large stone fences which are very picturesque especially in the fall.

Sullivan Community School is located on the outskirts of Desboro, and for years has been threatened with being shut down due to a lack of enrollment. However the enrolment of the school has usually been close to the population of the village.
