Derek Beggs

Derek Beggs is a Scottish Artist, living and working in Bavaria, Germany. Born in 1969, Derek graduated in 1992 with an honours degree from the world famous Glasgow School of Art. Since then he has continued to Draw and Paint and has exhibited and sold his works worldwide.

Beggs is inspired by the spirit, scenery and surroundings of Scotland, Bavaria and the other places he has visited and like many artists before him; this is reflected in his work. Whether figurative, or abstract, his artwork reflects a deep love of nature and the natural world, directly influenced by his beliefs, memories and surroundings.

He works in a wide variety of mediums, from oil to watercolour, pastel to pencil and constantly experiments with new techniques and materials. Although he has been described as “an expressionist impressionist”, his work draws influence from many styles, eras and schools of painting and drawing. Derek uses strong colours in both his pastel works and his paintings, but uses black extremely rarely, preferring to make darker tones from other colours. The heavy impasto texture of his paintings not only allows for a great deal of expression, but let the paintings live and fit in with their surroundings by reflecting available light differently depending on the time of day.

Often working on a number of paintings simultaneously, Derek’s studio is always busy and full of works in progress which change and develop over the period in which they are painted. This is one reason why his paintings are primarily in oil as it can be worked, removed and reworked until the desired effect is achieved. His unique style of pastel works although flat, maintain a texture of juxtaposed marks, blends and strokes, giving a great deal of depth to them.

In the past two years, Derek has had several successful solo exhibitions in Germany, Denmark and Scotland and is currently planning further exhibitions in Denmark, Scotland and a Garden Exhibition at his home and studio in Lengenfeld.
