The Derwent dam was built in 1902 to supply water to the Lower Derwent Valley and the Hope Valley.

The Howden dam was built around the same time as the Derwent dam and for the same reason.

[edit] The Workers

The workers lived in a temporary village called Birchinlee or Tin Town. The workers that died during the construction of the dams were buried in Bamford Church.
