John Derek Twigg (born 9 July 1959, Widnes) is a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is Member of Parliament for Halton in Cheshire, and was first elected at the 1997 general election.

[edit] Early life
He went to Bankfield High School (now called Bankfield School) on Liverpool Road in Widnes, and then to Halton College of Further Education (became Halton College, then Riverside College in August 2006) on Kingsway in Widnes. He worked for the Department of Education and Employment from 1975-96. From 1996-7 he was a political consultant.
[edit] Parliamentary career
Between 2002-4 he served as a whip. On 16 December 2004, in the reshuffle following the resignation of David Blunkett, he was appointed junior education minister in the Department for Education and Skills
In the cabinet reshuffle following the general election in May 2005, Twigg was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport. On 6 September 2006, after the resignation of Tom Watson, he was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Veterans at the Ministry of Defence [1]

He married Mary Cassidy in January 1988 in Widnes. They have a son (born June 1989) and daughter (born April 1992).
